Nicotine metabolism among African American, white smokers

“Smokers adjust their level of smoking to maintain blood levels of nicotine, which are determined in part by rates of nicotine metabolism, and while we can’t say from this study that differences in metabolism definitively account for lower quit rates, it could very well have an impact,” said Jeannette Zinggeler Berg, an M.D./Ph.D. student in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics at the University of Minnesota. What I suspect that they are not saying, is that melanin plays a large part in how Black people are more likely to be addicted to a great number of substances because of how it makes us metabolize various substances. It can be intimate that the infiltration of our communities with addictive substances was based on this knowledge. Remember, the study of melanin in blacks can be documented from the 1800’s. I think it’s important to question the necessities of these race-based studies.
