Who Gives a Rat's Ass 'Bout Some Dog

I’ve been silent. I know. Lately the news has been so inundated with racial incidents from legal injustices, to nooses hanging on collegiate doors, and I’ve been mum--silent and dare I say, affected. When last I typed, our people came out en mass to support the Jena 6. We were a consolidated people. The march was an awakening. The march indicated that apathy had to take a back seat and people had finally awakened. Black people heard the voice of Michael Basdin and responded! I felt such euphoria! I had not expected the juggernaut to lose speed. Dammit, we were going to revolutionize our existence--the movement had begun! Well, my euphoria was short-lived because Mychal Bell was re-incarcerated. He was once again behind bars based on a probation violation contingent upon the verdict of an open case. In other words, he is guilty before proven innocent. And no one rioted. Not even me.

So the onslaught of crazy news continued to flood the airwaves, like Nas titling his album “Nigger,” and frankly, I couldn’t type fast enough to keep up with this nonsense, so I shut down. I concentrated more on making paintings and scrapbooking and giggling to stupid boob tube discharge and rolling my eyes at all the stupid incidents slowly trying to escalate racial tensions in the U.S. of A., then Dog has a “private” conversation with his son that happened to leak to the “Enquirer.” Well color me skeptical.

Yes skeptical. I’m not falling for this crap. What do racists think we are? Do they think we jump at every instance of racial disparity? Give us some credit. We’re entrenched in a system of racial inequality, if we would attack every single thing that disparages us we would not rest. We’d have to protest in shifts. We would have to quit our jobs and take our children out of school to be able to protest as often as was needed. Give me a break.

As much as white media has focused on this Dog issue, you’d think Black people were calling for his head. Dog seems to be the only one calling for Al Sharpton and an apology; A&E really didn’t have to take his show off the air--we don’t watch that crap anyway. All of this apologizing and cancelling rings false to me. To tell you the truth, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the whole thing was nothing more than a publicity stunt to make him more relevant. Some white people have no scruples and the tendency for debauchery spans all class and creeds baby. From Dog’s humble trailer park ignorance to his producer’s coke induced gaffes, shady behavior is no stranger to people trying to make a quick buck. They were trying to play Black people. They were attempting to make us march against a show we don’t watch anyway, and garnering new viewers interested in viewing train wrecks. Dog’s career seems to be a scandal driven series because the only other time I vaguely heard of Dog, he was facing jail time. What for? I couldn’t tell you. I wasn’t that interested, but you see what I’m saying.

Bottom line is that their spoofing the Imus situation was far worse than Dog’s “nigger”-peppered diatribe. Making light of over 400 years of oppression far outweighs the rantings of some irrelevant bounty hunter who calls himself “Dog” for chrissakes. Their error wasn’t so much in their trying to cover all bases—you know, the “apology,” “prostration before Al Sharpton” and ultimate “suspension,”—the crime was in not taking stock of the current racial climate. To state it simply, Mychal Bell is still in jail, Don Imus is coming back to the airwaves making insane amounts of money, rappers don’t want to ever stop using the word “nigger,” and there has been so many nooses popping up all over the place we’re immune to all of it! Dog isn’t priority and we are completely aware that there are some battles that cannot be won at this time. There was no reason for the apology tour Dog has embarked upon. There is no reason to cancel his show, and the call by Dog to be whupped by Al Sharpton was overkill. Regardless of their ultimate goal, be it distraction or publicity, we will remain focused on our goal to stop the injustice in the legal systems. This is what has prompted me to write, to put into truth, this truth; we will not be distracted by random hate mongers. That’s no surprise or insult, we’ve been aware of this fact for over 400 years. When white people realize that they don’t have a clue, that’s when we will have made some progress. They can hang as many nooses as they wish, as long as there are no Black bodies attached to them. They can use the word nigger when talking to their children, as long as there are no Black people in the room. Whatever! That’s their business--as usual. We are completely aware that we live in a racist society. We are not fazed. What they can no longer do, is get away with abusing and incarcerating our little sisters over spilled cake. They cannot rape defenseless girls in their trailers, nor can they incarcerate innocent boys and get away with it. They can no longer do this without being called to task. By the way, there is a march on Washington on the 16th of November. See you there!
